Train display, other December events to benefit court advocates

Monday, November 19, 2001

Court Appointed Special Advocates of the 20th Judicial District will sponsor a fund-raising event Saturday, Dec. 1, and Sunday, Dec. 2, in downtown Conway.

With the help of the Central Arkansas Model Railroad Club, CASA will sponsor a model train display at Mountebanq Place, 1107 Oak St.

Times for the display will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 1 and 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 2. Admission to the train display will be by donation.

With the help of Bob's Grill and Cafeteria, 1112 Oak St., CASA will take part in the second annual Breakfast Buffet from 7 to 10 a.m. Dec. 1.

Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children under 10. A portion of the breakfast proceeds will be donated to CASA.

There will also be a "C-Bay" auction held in conjunction with the breakfast and train display. Trains, wreaths, ornaments and other holiday items will be available for bids. Proceeds from the auction will also benefit CASA.

A CASA cookbook will also be available. The cookbook, which sells for $8, will include recipes submitted by local residents. Also for sale will be a CASA holiday compact disc; it will sell for $10.

The CD will feature works by the New York Symphony and Children's Chorus. The CD will be available at That Bookstore, 1107 Oak St., or at Sensational Scrubs, 611 Court St. The CD is also available from CASA board members or the CASA office at 328-3347.

Court Appointed Special Advocates is a group of people who speak up in court for the best interests of children removed from the home due to abuse or neglect.

According to information from Mary Ann Hayes, CASA board member, a half million children in the United States are abused and neglected. CASA recruits and trains the volunteers who work with the child's case in the court system until it is resolved. The local CASA program recently celebrated its first year of operation in Faulkner County.
